CATTI考试遇到“XX文明”，还是只会“civilisation”？

“文明”一词在时政语篇中应用十分广泛，在CATTI考试中，考生有时会将其机械地译为“civilization”，但这个词在具体语境中语义要比“civilization”一词广泛、灵活得多。

译为“civilization”有时贴切，有时则词不达意，容易造成语义方面的混乱。

1. 在国家管理下创造出的物质的、精神的和制度方面的发明创造的总和。

例：

中华优秀传统文化源远流长、博大精深，是中华文明的智慧结晶。

China’s fine traditional culture is extensive and profound; it is the crystallization of the wisdom of Chinese civilization.

“文明”在表示一个国家或者社会与其他国家有所区别的这种独特物质精神发展总称时，可以将其翻译为“civilization”。这是一个较大的范畴。

“civilization”一词指“a society that has developed its own culture and institutions; the state of having developed an advanced culture and institutions; the process by which a society develops its own culture and institutions”，因此符合该语义。如西方文明（Western Civilization）、古希腊文明（Ancient Greek civilization）都是同理。

2. 人类社会发展进步

例：

中国式现代化是物质文明和精神文明相协调的现代化。

It is the modernization of material and cultural-ethical advancement.

“文明”在此语境下，指社会的正向发展，表示社会发展的水平和高度。

如例句中的“物质文明”指人类社会历史实践过程中创造经济财富；“精神文明”则指人类社会历史实践过程中所创造的精神财富。

包含此类语义可译为“advancement”。

“advancement”指“the development or improvement of something”，适用于表达进步的含义。

有时会与“progress”替换使用，如“精神文明和物质文明”也可译为“cultural and ethical progress and material progress”。

3. 人的礼貌素质水平

提高人民道德水准和文明素养。

These efforts will help raise public moral standards and enhance public civility.

这里的“文明”指人行为举止上“文明礼貌”、“有教养”，有较好的伦理道德观念，这也是一个较大的范畴。

英文选词时，也要用一个比较大的范畴词。因此可以译为“civility”。civility指“politeness or a polite remark”。因此当“文明”表示“礼貌素质”等形容人的道德水平时，可采取此译法。
